Is er een toekomst voor Joden in Europa? Dat is het thema van het webinar

webinar 31/1 17.00 uur

Dear Friends

In the late 19th century, 88 percent of the world’s Jewish population lived in Europe. Today, a ground-breaking new study shows that only nine percent of world Jewry resides in Europe, including Britain, Turkey and Russia – the lowest proportion in more than 800 years. Only 1.3 million people currently living in Europe define themselves as Jews. This is the same percentage counted by famous Jewish traveller and scholar, Benjamin of Tudela, in 1170.

Given this demography, what is the future for European Jews? Come hear Sergio Della Pergola, Professor Emeritus of Population Studies at Hebrew University’s Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry, offer some explanations. Sergio is a specialist on the demography of world Jewry and has published numerous books and more than 200 papers. He has lectured at more than 70 universities and research centres in Western Europe, North America and Latin America. Born in Trieste when Italy was under German occupation, his family settled in Milan. He immigrated to Israel in 1966.

Leslie Bergman, the EUPJ Honorary Life President, will join the conversation, reflecting on demographic changes in Europe’s Progressive Jewish communities. Leslie had held senior positions in various Progressive Jewish organisations including the SAUPJ in South Africa, the EUPJ in Europe and the WUPJ. He is a management consultant with degrees from South African and US universities.

Bill Echikson is the director of the EUPJ’s Brussels office. A Yale graduate, Bill started his career as a journalist for the Christian Science Monitor and subsequently worked for other large news outlets like the Wall Street Journal. After a seven-year tenure at Google, he now heads the EUPJ’s office in the European capital.
